Currumbin RSL fly both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags for the first time

In the spirit of reconciliation and acknowledgement of Indigenous culture and residents in the community, Currumbin RSL is proud to fly both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags for the first time this week alongside the Australian Flag.

Current board members of the sub-branch voted to include the flags in the existing display to demonstrate Currumbin RSLs recognition of First Nation peoples, promoting a sense of community partnership and their commitment toward reconciliation.

"We have long included Indigenous veterans in our days of remembrance services, but the raising of these flags alongside the Australian Flag sends a message that Indigenous people are welcome in our club" Mr Michael Humphreys, President of Currumbin RSL Sub-Branch and memorial club, said.

The new flagpole was provided by grant funding from the Saluting Their Service Commemoration Program by the Department of Veteran Affairs. The office of Karen Andrews MP, supplied the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Flag.

This morning the flags were raised by Elders and local students from Currumbin State Primary School. Every day of the year now at Currumbin RSL when the flags are raised and lowered, Indigenous culture will be recognised.
