Meet Sally, candidate in the state by-election for Currumbin

Background

Educated at Beaumaris State School, St Hilda's, Southport, University of Queensland

Resident of Gold Coast for sixty years. Teacher for 25 years.

Will advocate for the interests of Currumbin and, as there is only a single electorate in consideration at this time, for the Whole of the Gold Coast City.

Public roles- President of Wildlife Queensland Gold Coast Branch (founded by David Fleay), past president Coomera Valley Residents Association, past President Citizens for Democracy Gold Coast

Family - Husband David Spain. solicitor and current secretary Chamber of Commerce in NSW. Son, Jonathon 7th generation lawyer now principal of Spains Solicitors (NSW & Q'ld), Son Christopher, botanist, Daughter Elanor, Principal, Ballet Academy - My Parents in Gold Coast businesses (restaurant and hotel) during my childhood.

 

Policy Positions

1 Will ensure that the issue of Climate Change and response to this , is central to all decision making.

2 Re-address Planning Legislation, so those who have invested in businesses and homes are not sidelined and detrimentally affected, by perceptible ad hoc and non sequential planning, code assessment mechanisms and excessive delegated authority ,at local level, and 'performance' based planning, which has perceptible lack of relationship to the Town Plan. In short , protect local investment in neighbourhoods.

3 Proactive funded response to the social and densely populated, non serviced settlement reasons for the growth in crime and strong , on the ground address, of citizen and business safety

4 No second casino and positive response to the increased public space benefit offered by current Casino facility

5 State funded Ballet and Theatre companies for the sixth largest City

6 Bank levy for infrastructure, as proposed by Greens MLA, Michael Berkan in order to pay for help pay for infrastructure needed within City and elsewhere.

7 Regional Central Parks to be actually acquired, as was planned in the SEQ 20001 plan

8 Affirmation of the M1 expansion, with environmental amelioration, as proposed in current consultation.

9 Support, and advocacy for a quicker timetable for start, for heavy rail

10 Extended period of inclusive consultation on Light Rail 3b, considering prior local problems with this network

11 Funded address of refuge system re domestic violence and increased preventive program and funded address of homeless issue

12 Advocacy for increased support of education in accord with Gonski model

13 Support of the Spit Masterplan and advocacy for World Surfing Reserve to extend along the full Coastline.

14 Promotion of tourism over multiple local and international markets s City not overdependent on one or two.

15 Support for use of State of the Art Brisbane Cruise Terminal and promotion of real value tourism from there. Also tourism via local presence of Super Yachts

16 Necessary, immediate, multiple acquisition of large tracts of habitat so that koala, our State emblem and local tourist icon, does not become locally extinct

17 Extension of the Moreton Bay Marine Park to include our City and protect fish stocks, dive industry, and marine biodiversity

18 State overview of the 6th largest City response to Town Planning and flooding problems and emergency response preparedness

19 Increased funding to the CCC to allow for timely dealing with issues

20 A review of animal protection legislation to improve the situation of domestic , farmed and native animals
