Pacific Motorway (M1) Varsity Lakes to Tugun upgrade

Notification #10 - Project update and upcoming construction activities

The above photographs show progress of the construction area near the Burleigh (Exit 87) southbound off-ramp.

Photograph 1 - In May, the area was cleared of all vegetation and construction then began, to create the beginnings of what will become a new Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI).

Photographs 2 and 3 - Taken in August and September from near the off-ramp where the red dot is located in the May photograph. They show major earthworks and construction of a new retaining wall for the foundation of the DDI near where it will connect with Southport-Burleigh Road.

Next fortnight - Sunday 13 to Friday 25 September 2020

Night works

The project will be working at night throughout September to prepare for a traffic change at Burleigh (Exit 87). Night works occur Sunday to Thursday from 6pm to 6am with traffic impacts generally from 8pm to 5am.

Night works - Sunday 13 to Thursday 17 September 2020

  • Burleigh (Exit 87)
    • Nightly lane and shoulder closures will be in place on the eastern (Southport-Burleigh Road) side of the interchange, along the southbound on-ramp and on the southbound side of the motorway. These closures are required for vegetation clearing works.
      • To ensure the safety of motorists and workers, vegetation located close to the road can only be removed at night when traffic flows are generally at their lowest.
      • Heavy equipment including chainsaws will be in use. Noise from these night works should be expected and is unavoidable. We apologise for any disturbance this may cause local residents.
      • For the safety of native wildlife, a licensed Fauna Spotter Catcher will be onsite during clearing operations and will relocate any wildlife from the area.
    • Nightly drainage and asphalt works will also occur behind construction barriers near Southport-Burleigh Road. No traffic or other impacts are expected from these works.

Night works - Sunday 20 to Thursday 24 September 2020

  • Burleigh (Exit 87)
    • Nightly ramp, lane and shoulder closures will be in place on both sides of the interchange for asphalting works.

Day works

Daytime works behind construction barriers occur Monday to Friday from 6am to 6pm and Saturdays from 6am to 6pm, when required.

  • Project-wide - Varsity Lakes (Exit 85) to Burleigh (Exit 87)
    • Activities continue daily on both sides of the alignment including ongoing earthworks and drainage installation.
  • Burleigh (Exit 87)
    • Works are continuing around the interchange. The main activities include earthworks, ground strengthening works, drainage, road construction including asphalting and works for the upcoming change of traffic arrangement at the interchange.

There are ways you can help

In a major motorway upgrade, the community is a vital part of our extended team and there are ways you can help.

Being patient and understanding should you experience noise from the works, traffic delays or a range of other impacts is a really big help. We do try to minimise the impacts on the community but during such major construction works, many of these impacts are unavoidable.

You can also help 'spread the word' about our upcoming works and the expected impacts by sharing this regular email update with anyone you know who uses the M1 and encouraging them to sign-up for these free updates. The more people who know what to expect, the better! To register, just ask them to contact the team and provide their details - see below for contact information.

Your help in these ways will make a real difference to the team working hard to deliver this project for the people of the Gold Coast.

Thank you!
