Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary named Queensland’s Best Tourist Attraction

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary has won Queensland’s most prestigious tourism accolade, named Best Major Tourist Attraction at last Friday nights Queensland Tourism Awards.

At the event, hosted by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council and presented by chamber member Queensland Airports Limited, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary was recognised for its ongoing work to educate and inspire visitors about conservation through unforgettable wildlife experiences. This year’s awards shone a spotlight on the accomplishments of tourism businesses across the state, who have persevered through the challenges presented by COVID-19 border closures and lockdowns.

National Trust of Queensland Chief Executive Officer Jayme Cuttriss said, “We are so proud of our fantastic team for receiving this recognition. They are so dedicated to what we do. It is so nice to celebrate after a tough couple of years, and we can’t wait to welcome holidaymakers this summer.”

Honouring the conservation mission started by Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary founder Alex Griffiths almost 75 years ago, staff and volunteers are passionate about ensuring that Australia’s precious wildlife can be protected and preserved for generations to come.

During lockdowns when the Sanctuary was closed in line with Queensland Government restrictions, devoted teams continued to safely operate every day, ensuring the health and wellbeing of all the animal residents on site. Despite the challenges of the global pandemic, their work has ensured that guests have continued to make lifelong memories at the Gold Coast’s most iconic wildlife experience.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary General Manager Michael Kelly said, “It’s important we acknowledge our generous local community, who has continued to come through the gates during these uncertain times. Their support throughout the pandemic has allowed us to maintain a wildlife experience where people can make meaningful connections and understand the importance of looking after our beautiful natural world.”

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is looking forward to welcoming back interstate and international visitors. As border restrictions begin to ease, a jam-packed calendar of Christmas and summer holiday events has been planned, including the launch of the brand-new Extinction Trail.
