Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 - first piece of Broadbeach to Burleigh link arrives

The rail will eventually form part of the linkage between the existing network and Stage 3 systems. The rail will be installed near the end of Broadbeach south station, on the Gold Coast Highway.

The rail will be part of a 40-metre section, with two tracks for the north and south. GoldlinQ CEO Phil Mumford welcomed the first rail delivery for the Stage 3 route.

“This is a small part of the 6.7km Stage 3 section but it is a real positive to have it on the Gold Coast and for works to be scheduled to start on the concrete installation next month,” he said.

Mr Mumford said progress continued to be made on Stage 3 delivery.

“We had the five new trams arrive by the middle of this year and the stabling construction at the depot is now complete,” he said.

“We look forward to getting above the ground next year and beginning the rest of rail works.”

The rail has been placed where it will be installed, ready for electrical works to be completed this month and concreting next month. The work is happening now because utility and civil works are being undertaken in the same location, and the site can be accessed.

Work continues to ramp up on Stage 3, and currently there is a workforce of more than 500 people – with most living locally.

Most of the workforce continues to be engaged in the relocation and upgrading of city infrastructure below the ground, future-proofing the assets. Civil works have also increased from Mermaid Beach to Burleigh.

GCLR3 includes 6.7 kilometres of new dual-track light rail running from Broadbeach south station to Burleigh Heads, eight new light rail stations and five light rail vehicles.
